Earlier today Facebook posted the announcement that they are rolling out the Photo Tag Suggestions technology here in the United States.
As Facebook describes it: "Because photos are such an important part of Facebook, we want to be sure you know exactly how tag suggestions work: When you or a friend upload new photos, we use face recognition software—similar to that found in many photo editing tools—to match your new photos to other photos you're tagged in.
We group similar photos together and, whenever possible, suggest the name of the friend in the photos... this new feature called tag suggestions will make tagging multiple photos even more convenient."
Now if you upload pictures from your cousin's wedding, we'll group together pictures of the bride and suggest her name. Instead of typing her name 64 times, all you'll need to do is click "Save" to tag all of your cousin's pictures at once. By making tagging easier than before, you're more likely to know right away when friends post photos. We notify you when you're tagged, and you can un tag yourself at any time. As always, only friends can tag each other in photos.
If for any reason you don't want your name to be suggested, you will be able to disable suggested tags in your Privacy Settings.
And if that's you -- you would rather not accept or rather provide your friends with this new auto-tagging feature with your name/face, you can disable it. Here's how...
-
Under Account (top right corner of your Facebook page) - scroll down to select 'Privacy Settings'
-
Click on 'Customize Settings' at bottom of the menu
-
This opens up the menu 'Choose Your Privacy Settings Customize settings'
-
Scroll down to the 2nd Section titled 'Things others share',
-
then click on the Edit Settings button next to "Suggest photos of me to friends" it will open a menu that looks like this:
By default Facebook has set this to the 'Enabled' position for you. If you do not wish this function to be enabled for all your friends to use (to tag or identify you each time you pop up in a photo on their Facebook page/s) then you should set the setting to 'Disabled'.
