I have been using Epson brand printers with my computer for a few years and not had this occur, but some of my colleagues have experienced what is called the 'End of Life' notice. It's a message that the printer sends to your computer indicating basically that it's time for you to purchase a new printer. As a colleague pointed out on a List Serve "It's a weird policy - imagine if your car declared itself dead after 80K and stopped running that very second!" which is basically what the Epson is doing.
If this does or has happened to you, the good news is that there are workarounds. David Adame from Denver Disc (www.denverdisc.com) shares the following: "I've sent a lot of people to this site, which is free software designed (among other things) to allow you to continue to use the printer: SSC Service Utility for Epson Printers
Surprisingly, Epson now offers a similar feature on their own website: Epson Ink Pads Reset Utility."
The Epson web site explains their reasoning for the end of life notice but also provides access to the software that enables you to essentially 'reset' your printer. I should note that the Epson site requires you to enter your contact information and your printer serial #. And at this time, both these options only are available for Windows computers (though the Epson site indicates they are working towards a solution for Mac computers).
Thank you for sharing this information. I found the details very helpful.
