YouTube made an announcement today that will delight a number of folks who use their website/service to showcase their videos to the world... YouTube has lifted the time-length restriction for many 'YouTubers'.
Used to be that your video could not exceed 10-minutes in length, then back this past summer YouTube increased that time limit to 15-minutes. Today they are lifting the time restriction whatsoever!
From the YouTube Blog "Starting today, we’ll begin allowing selected users with a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines and our copyright rules to upload videos that are longer than 15 minutes."
What that means is if you have not ever been 'scolded' for using commercial music that you had no legal right to do so (copyright policies) then it sounds like your channel will now accept longer videos!
How do you know if your YouTube channel has the green light to load longer videos? Simply log into your YouTube Channel and click on the 'Upload' button. If you're good to do - you'll get the following message (as I did this morning when I logged into my YouTube Channel):
This is great for independent film-makers, for student film-makers and hobbyists who would like to share longer events captured on video via the 'net. The only possible down-side to this change in YouTube policy is that we are likely to see videos that are not necessarily better, just longer.
